To be able to write effectively, you must understand the importance of proper essay structure. Structuring the essay does not only mean giving your writing a form. It is what the whole writing process can be summarised to be done. To structure your writing, you need to set a goal right from the start. Generally, this goal is answering the question, addressing an issue or following instructions expressly or impliedly given to you.

The importance of proper essay structure should be realised by any student before they will be able to say that they are indeed developing their writing skills. You can start developing the framework of your writing by setting the goal of your task. Your goal is to show to your tutor or professor that you have the knowledge and skills in your subject area. To do this, your writing must be an outstanding answer to the question involved in your writing task or an excellent discussion of the issue in question.

Showing to your tutor or professor that you have understood the importance of proper essay structure is also showing your academic and technical skills. In putting your thoughts, ideas or answer into writing, you must show that you are not merely gathering and reporting information. Pick out only selected information which can help you give your arguments, proposition or answer. Do not immediately jump into research, reading as many materials as you can and including all of them in your writing.

Your research must be guided by your goal of giving an answer through your writing. If a question is given, set it in context. Otherwise, identify or determine what is the question behind what is given to you. Then, set it in context. To do this, determine how does the question fit with key issues, controversies and debates within the scope of your subject matter. Whether the question is given or you have determined it, it usually asks you to give your educated opinion about a specified aspect or angle of any of the key issues. You should understand the context of the question so that you can give an excellent answer.
