In review, the essay entails three major parts which are the introduction, discussion and conclusion. The discussion contains paragraphs presenting the different points you are giving to support the thesis you are stating in the introductory part. In the discussion paragraphs, you give evidence to support each point you have raised. The conclusion part of your essay summarises the points. This is the overview of how to structure an essay.
The figure of an hour-glass with a long middle portion is a visual representation of how to structure an essay. This is because the introduction should start with a broad statement and continue with a narrowing pattern. You should plan the structure of your writing the first paragraph as a series of statements which starts with a general one and ends with a specific one.
How to structure an essay introduction which is thorough can be done by asking yourself who, what, when, where, how and, or, why. Thinking about the literature you have researched about the topic is very helpful. Use what you have in mind and describe how what you will talk about will contribute to the topic in general and will relate to what others have already written. You can add to the introduction an explanation of why the topic is important.
As part of the introduction, tell your reader where you will take their reading experience. In other words, talk about what will come out in the essay. At the end portion of the introduction, you should have already narrowed or make your topic specific. Here, you will present your thesis statement. Alternatively, you can start with your thesis statement or a rhetorical question. If you do so, it should be the only specific portion of the opening of your introduction. Immediately proceed with the broad start and continue narrowing down.
To summarise, the general rule is that your start should be broad and you narrow down along the way. The introduction’s usual or ideal weight should be around 5% of the whole essay. So far, the overview and the introduction should be enough to give you an essay structure introduction.
