Students who wish to study in British universities would do well to learn about the nature of UK essays that are assigned by British professors and tutors. Foreign students should take extra time to learn essay writing tips, since students who have studied in the UK in their lower levels would already be somewhat familiar with the British educational system.

There is considerable difference in the way the British conduct the process of education as compared to the American system, for example. In American universities, learning is more individualistic and competition is encouraged among students. Lectures are often broad and will cover the essential ideas of the topic. When seminars and lectures are given, there is a designated leader, which is often the professor or a student tasked to talk about a certain topic. The students are guided through the topic by the leader and they reach the conclusion together. In contrast, British universities concentrate their lectures on a narrow and specialized topic. Students are given more leeway to grasp what is being taught by the material by assigning them a variety of reading lists and organizing more lectures and seminars. In the latter, the student has a more participative role and questions are expected to be raised. When it comes to writing UK essays, these rules have a certain effect to what will be perceived as good, and will warrant a higher mark.

The first indication of good writing for UK essays is if they have an intellectual focus. The essays have to address a specific question or thesis, instead of concentrating discourse on a general topic. A good essay should also be able to look at all the important implications of the question. These will be discussed in detail on the important sections of the essay. Like all other types of essays, British essays should have a coherent essay structure so that the ideas are presented in an orderly and logical fashion. The ideas of each paragraph should have continuity from the last one, so that every paragraph sets the ideas for the next one. This can be accomplished through the use of transition statements.
